Developers who owe local Authorities levies must be forced to provide houses for social housing | |||||||||
Local Authorities who are owed levies should move quickly and examine the unsold properties of developers in default, according to Terence Flanagan, Fine Gael Housing Spokesman. "Developers owe Dublin Local Authorities a staggering €398 million in unpaid levies. The harsh reality is that many of these developers also owe millions to banks and their assets will be pursued by the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) if they default on loans. "Currently, Dublin Local Authorities are experiencing massive cash shortfalls becuase their Budgets have been reduced as well as the failure of developers to pay their levies. "There are thousands of people awaiting social housing in Dublin and the Minister for the Environment should now force developers to hand over vacant houses to Local Authorities. "It is not in Local Authorities interests to drag developers to court as it is an expensive long process and with the fear of bankruptcy looming, it may prove futile". Ends.
