Bray boxer now sets sights on Olympic Gold
Fine Gael Wicklow Deputy, Simon Harris, has congratulated Katie Taylor on her defeat of Tajikistan’s Mavzuna Chorieva this afternoon (Wednesday) which will see the Bray native go on to the lightweight final tomorrow in the hope of securing an Olympic gold medal.
“There is tremendous excitement and pride, not only in Wicklow but throughout Ireland owing to Katie’s performance in the London Olympic Games. As Katie’s home town, Bray, in particular, is alive with anticipation and nervous energy at the prospect of one of our own taking part in an Olympic final.
“Hundreds of people have turned out to watch and support Katie in both her matches on big screens which have been placed around Bray town centre and the community spirit and unity of purpose being felt in the town is palpable.
“People the length and breadth of Ireland have rallied around Katie who is not only a phenomenal athlete but also an exemplary role model for young people, whatever their interest. Irrespective of what happens tomorrow, Katie has secured at least a silver medal, which is a brilliant achievement. Everyone is behind her now as she heads into the final tomorrow and we wait anxiously to see if she can bring home the gold for Bray, for Wicklow and for Ireland.”
