Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport today extended his congratulations to golfer Rory McIlroy on winning the US PGA Championship in Kiawah Island last night (Sunday 12 August 2012).
Minister Varadkar said: “In a week where Irish athletes have surpassed expectations and inspired copious volumes of national pride, Rory’s achievement is truly exceptional. On behalf of the Irish people I am delighted to congratulate Rory on winning his second major in the US PGA Championship in Kiawah Island last night and in the process returning to No.1 in the world rankings.
“Conditions were difficult over the weekend and to beat such a strong field by a record breaking eight shots was a truly phenomenal performance. Rory has become a multiple major winner at a younger age than Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods and his magnificent win over the weekend is a wonderful return to form with the Ryder Cup only around the corner.”
Minister Varadkar added: “Rory has made his family, his coach Michael Bannon, Holywood Golf Club and everyone in Ireland immensely proud and I wish him further success in the future."
