Councillor Brian O’Donoghue

Cllr Brian O’Donoghue

Carlow County Council

Brian is the current Chairman of Carlow County Council (2018-2019) and was elected to Carlow County Council in May 2014 with 1,018 first preference votes. He is the youngest Cathaoirleach in over 100 years in Carlow and one of the youngest in the country.

Elected to the Carlow municipal district, Brian represents Rathvilly, Hacketstown, Clonmore, Tynock and Tullow in particular and is looking forward to canvassing the new local electoral area in 2019, which will incorporate Myshall, Kildavin, Clonegal, Ballon, Fenagh, The Fighting Cocks, Rathoe and Ardattin.

Brian’s two marquee projects are playgrounds in Rathvilly and Hacketstown which are currently in development stage and have applied for LEADER funding.

As Cathaoirleach, Brian would like to see the county invest more time, energy and where needed, funding into tourism.

In particular Clonmore castle and Haroldstown Dolmen are two local landmarks to Brian that he would love to see investment in.

A passionate Carlow man with a strong background in GAA and local community volunteering, he believes Carlow has a lot to offer and through his skills acquired through eight years in sports journalism Brian knows how to dissect and sell the good news stories Carlow has to tell.

Brian has deep Fine Gael roots on his late father’s side of the family. His grandmother Mary Mulcahy was a cousin of General Richard “Dick” Mulcahy, a former party leader, government minister and the man who gave the oration at the graveside at the funeral of Michael Collins.
