Bernard was first elected to Donegal County Council in 1997, and has been returned to office at each subsequent election since that time. He is married to Mairead and they have five children. A dedicated and experienced public representative he has spent the past thirty years working together with the councils of Limavady, Strabane and Derry in order to secure the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of his electoral area.
Distinguishable as the most northerly councillor in Ireland geographically, much of his work involves cross border projects. The Inishowen Peninsula in itself is a significantly large area and has undergone much growth due to Bernard’’s significant efforts. Bernard is driving the quest to constantly upgrade original roads on the park to National Road status.
He is also strongly focused on the provision of an effective Ambulance service which is fit for purpose to serve the local community. Farming, Fishing and Tourism are industries which are vital to the health of the local economy and growth and further job creation within these areas are high on Bernard’’s priority list, as is the protection and sustainable development of the beautiful local environment.
