I am a Councillor on Wexford County Council since 1991 following my rise to fame as a result of my actions on board the Heard of the Free Enterprise ferry where I aided the rescue of many passengers. I served as Chairman on the County Council from 2007 to 2009, and as Chairman of the South Eastern Regional Authority. I am also Chairman of the Hook Heritage Lighthouse Committee for the last 10 years when we took over the running of the building and turned it into a tourism hotspot for the New Ross area.
I am Chairman of Horeswood GAA Club for the last 5 years. I also served on the county board for eight years. I am married with 3 children and work full time as a car sales manager in New Ross.
