A Housing System with Citizens at the Centre
Making sure there are enough safe and secure homes for every citizen.
A home is one of the most basic needs a person has. Fine Gael believes that one of the fundamental responsibilities of the state is to make sure that there are enough safe and secure homes for every citizen. Home ownership is not in the reach of many today, and we believe it should be. Fine Gael is the party of home ownership. We also believe that there should be the option for individuals and families to rent in secure, good-quality and long-term tenancies either in the private market or through an expanded social housing stock.
We will continue the progress made to date, for example:
- Social Housing: In 2018, 8,421 (including 4,251 new-builds) homes were added to the active social housing stock and there was an 85% increase in new build social homes in 2018 when compared to 2017.
- Homelessness: Budget 2019 gave an extra €30m for homelessness services (to a €146m total in 2019). In 2017, 4,700 individuals exited homelessness and a further 2,332 adults and their associated dependents exited homelessness in the first six months of 2018.
- Housing Supply: Over 18,000 new dwellings were built in 2018, a 25% increase on 2017.
