Boots on the Ground, Broadband Rollout Begins – Buttimer
29th January 2020 -
Rollout of the National Broadband Plan has begun in earnest, as team deployed to Cork. Fine Gael candidate for Cork South Central Jerry Buttimer confirmed today welcoming the progress on this vital project.
Speaking today, Jerry Buttimer said:
“This is the most important investment in rural Ireland since rural electrification. I am delighted to confirm today that teams of surveyors have hit the ground in Cork to begin surveying and design works for this vital project.
“Under the National Broadband Plan, 1.1 million people will get access to a high speed service, opening up opportunities in remote working, e-learning, monitoring of livestock, health initiatives, energy efficiencies in the home – and these are only the opportunities we know about! Digital technology is transforming how we live and work.
“This is fantastic news, not only for Cork but for all rural communities waiting on this essential infrastructure’
In Cork, the areas of Monkstown, Myrtleville, Minane Bridge, and Upper Rochestown will be among the first to be surveyed. This work includes physically walking the terrain of these areas to record and document the type and condition of current infrastructure in the area, such as poles and underground ducts.
This year, 300 Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) will be rolled out to community centres, sports facilities and schools, where free internet access will be made available for local communities.
