Vandals and criminals will not stop local people from burying their loved ones with dignity

Fine Gael TD for Dublin South Central, Catherine Byrne, has said that vandals and criminal gang activity at Goldenbridge Cemetery will not stop local people from burying their loved ones with dignity. Deputy Byrne condemned yet another act of vandalism last night at the historic cemetery.
“I am really angry to hear the news that Goldenbridge Cemetery was vandalised again last night. Four new burial headstones were damaged. This follows on from recent vandalism where 20 old headstones were destroyed. And last year the grave of WT Cosgrave was desecrated also.
“Goldenbridge Cemetery is of huge historic significance. Established in 1828, it was one of the first Catholic cemeteries established in Ireland after Catholic emancipation in 1828
“I have been working for many years to try and get this historic cemetery reopened as a living cemetery so people from Dublin 8, 10 and 12 can bury their loved ones locally. I was delighted when the Glasnevin Trust took on this project and following a detailed survey they announce that up to 1000 grave plots could be made available.
“These vandals and criminals will not stop this project going ahead and I am determined that local people will not be held to ransom by them. Local people should be able to bury their loved ones with dignity in this cemetery.”
