Madigan welcomes decision to reopen Stepaside Garda station on a pilot basis
13th June 2017 - Fine Gael Press Office
“It was announced by the Government today that Stepaside Garda station will be reopened on an interim basis.
“The Garda Commissioner, having analysed population and crime trends, and taking account of the availability of Stations for reuse, has recommended that Stepaside Station be reopened.
“This is a major victory for local residents who have worked so hard on this issue for so long. Since the station was closed in in 2013, the Stepaside community has worked tirelessly for their Garda station to be restored. I thank local campaigners for all their hard work that is finally paying off.
“As I raised in the Dáil last March, Stepaside’s growing population means it is crucial that the community is well served by a local Garda station.
“It was reported last year that there was a 50% increase in burglaries recorded in the general environs of Stepaside since the closure of this Garda station, and with the growing population and an increased demographic, it is clear that this community needs a Garda station.
“The Office of Public Works will now work with the Gardaí on the refurbishment of the station.
“I have campaigned actively throughout my time as a public representative alongside of the many Stepaside residents working who have worked hard over the last number of years for their Garda station to be re-opened.
“This positive result bears testament to the ability of a well organised local campaign to make a difference in cooperation with local politicians. Politics works for local communities.
“If I can ever assist with any issue, my office is always more than happy to hear from local groups and I will do all I can to assist.”
