Vote Michael D. Higgins number one this Friday – Doherty
21st October 2018 - Regina Doherty
Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, has urged everyone to vote for Michael D. Higgins in the upcoming presidential election this Friday (October 26th).
Minister Doherty emphasised: “I am personally delighted to endorse Michael D. Higgins to continue his great work as President of Ireland.
“When we decide to elect a President, we are deciding who best represents what Ireland truly stands for. I have been privileged to travel overseas with Michael D and to witness first-hand what a great representative of our nation he is.
“Combining intellect, empathy, passion and a fantastic fluency with words, he has proven to be a true statesman who reflects the best of what this country is all about.
“All his life Michael D. Higgins has been an advocate for justice and progress. Both as a member of Seanad Éireann and a TD for Galway West he was fearless in challenging inequity and injustice.
“For decades he championed issues including decent employment, public housing provision, the rights of people with disabilities and ethical standards for public office holders.
“As a consistent voice for equality, he fought for elimination of poverty and a ‘citizenship floor’ of basic rights and participation below which no citizen should fall. He has always maintained a strong interest in justice and peace worldwide.
“Fine Gael is committed to supporting his re-election unconditionally and we are encouraging everyone across the country to lend him their fullest support.”
Minister Doherty is leading Fine Gael’s campaign to support the President’s re-election.
Commenting on the campaign, she stressed: “While the polls look very good for Michael D at the moment, elections are decided by who turns up on the day so we cannot be complacent.
“I am proud to say Michael D is my President and if you want him to continue to be your President, please make sure you get out and vote on Friday 26th October.”
