Removing VAT from defibrillators will help save lives in communities across the country, said Fine Gael Health Spokesperson Colm Burke, who had previously called for the measure.

Deputy Burke was speaking after the announcement of a move to zero VAT on defibrillators, by Minister Paschal Donohoe during Budget 2023.

Deputy Burke said, “Removing VAT from defibrillators will greatly increase their take up in local communities around the country. This is a really progressive measure, removing tax on what is lifesaving equipment and making it more affordable.

“I have called for this change previously, but heretofore it was not permitted under the EU VAT Directive. However, Minister Donohoe clarified today that after much negotiation at EU level it is now possible for Member States to apply a zero rate, and he is moving to do so.

“Fine Gael is working to build stronger, safer communities to make our local areas better places in which to live and work. It is really important that every community has access to a defibrillator. Defibrillators and effective CPR are the main treatment for casualties of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Approximately 95% of Sudden Cardiac Arrests are fatal without immediate treatment.

“Community groups and sports organisations will now be incentivised to secure defibrillators for their premises, helping to ensure their members and the wider local community have access to them. All the evidence shows that defibrillators help to save lives, and today’s move is extremely positive in terms of Fine Gael’s ongoing work to build stronger, safer communities”, concluded Deputy Burke.
