Next generation of Paralympic athletes begins in the classroom – Callaghan
Carlow-Kilkenny FG candidate calls for training courses for teachers to better support students with disability in sport

Specialised training courses for teachers could be a game changer for students with disabilities’ participation in sport, a Fine Gael Election Candidate has said.
Catherine Callaghan, Fine Gael General Election Candidate for Carlow-Kilkenny, said: “Our incredible Paralympians have shown us what can be achieved when talent and determination are supported from an early age.
“By giving our teachers the right tools to support students with disability in sport, we can help nurture the next generation of athletes.
“Through providing targeted training courses for our primary and secondary school teachers, we can equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to support students with disabilities effectively.
“Sports and physical activities are vital for the development of all children, but for students with a disability, the benefits can be even more significant.
“Regular participation in physical activities can enhance physical health, improve motor skills, and boost self-esteem.
“Perhaps even more importantly, it provides these students with opportunities to build friendships, develop teamwork skills, and feel a sense of belonging.
“Our teachers are already doing an incredible job, but with the right training, could involve learning how to modify games, use adaptive equipment, or create inclusive PE plans that allow every child to participate, regardless of their abilities.
“I believe that providing our teachers with the tools they need to support students with disabilities is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive education system.
“Every child deserves the chance to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, and with the right support, we can make this a reality for all students.” Callaghan concluded.
