Luas extension to Poolbeg moving in right direction – Geoghegan
9th April 2025 - Fine Gael Press Office
Government is to consider accelerating the Luas to Poolbeg Luas line, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Deputy James Geoghegan has been highlighting the need to extend the Luas Red Line from The Point through Ringsend and Irishtown and for the need for a common sense approach to delivering public transport in Dublin.
Deputy Geoghegan said: “Minister of State for Rural and Community Development and Transport, Jerry Buttimer said today in the Dáil that there is huge merit to this project and acknowledged that it would serve the huge population currently residing along the proposed extension route.”
Minister Buttimer confirmed that the Luas extension has been highlighted for possible acceleration as part of the National Development Plan review, which is planned to take place this year.
Deputy Geoghegan continued: ““I am glad the Minister agrees that it is common sense to speed up the extension of the Luas to Poolbeg. We should deliver this vital piece of infrastructure now, before thousands of new people move to the area and raise the cost of construction,” said Deputy Geoghegan.
“10,000 more people will live in the area in 10 years’ time. We know that it is easier to build infrastructure in places that are less densely populated. We can save the taxpayer significant sums by taking the initiative now, rather than waiting until almost 2040”.
The National Transport Authority has instructed Transport Infrastructure Ireland to undertake a feasibility review for the project, which is set to be completed this summer.
