Trade can’t wait – Richmond

All parties in the Dáil must make final ratification of the EU-Canada trade deal, CETA, an immediate priority, a Fine Gael Minister has said.

The call comes in light of the recent Canadian election results amid ongoing concern about US tariffs on imports.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Sandyford Business District, Minister of State Neale Richmond said: “For too long, far too many have been far too quiet, too squeamish, about talking up the benefits of EU negotiated trade deals. We have given far too much airtime to opponents and activists who have little interest in delivering a growing economy.

“In this uncertain economic environment, it is vital that businesses have the confidence to double down on opportunities offered by EU trade deals. They need politicians that will work to tear down barriers to trade, rather than put them up with idealistic rhetoric.

“With a new Government elected this week in Canada, the final ratification of the EU-Canada trade deal, CETA, must be an immediate priority.

“Legislation to allow for the final ratification of CETA will be in the Dáil soon, the issue has been debated at length. We must ensure this legislation and the final ratification of CETA is enabled as quickly as possible.

“Because, as we reach the halfway point of Trump’s 90 day pause on introducing more tariffs on EU goods, trade can’t wait. Businesses across Ireland, be they in Sandyford or Clonmel, Clones or Salthill, can’t wait.

“During my time as a Minister, I have been lucky to lead nine different trade missions. This is hard work that delivers for businesses and workers in Ireland. We have the responsibility now to champion new markets and new opportunities.

“Fine Gael is the party of business that will be that champion. We have an understanding of what businesses need and we have a team led by the Tánaiste that knows how to maximise the benefits of EU trade deals.

“We know that businesses in Ireland and across the EU need certainty and a political system that will deliver as many opportunities as possible for them.”
