Post office funding must be included in NDP – Carrigy

The National Development Plan (NDP) must include increased support for our post office network so they can remain viable, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Micheál Carrigy said that the government must look at all possible options to sustain our post offices.

“The Irish Postmasters’ Union is looking for €15million in annual funding to maintain the post office network. It is vital that we provide this funding and now is the perfect opportunity with the revised National Development Plan.

“We all know the social importance of the post offices for people in rural areas. It provides a financial service and a social hub in our communities, and we cannot let this be lost.

“An Post is currently in negotiations with the post office network as the existing contract between the pair expires this month.

“We need immediate clarity around future funding of the network to ensure the continued sustainability of the network, and we need to ensure the retention of the vital services they provide.

“Post offices that are in danger of closing, particularly those in rural areas, must be helped immediately to ensure the public still has access to vital services across our towns and villages.

“I welcome that An Post CEO David McRedmond said this morning that there are no plans to close post offices, but many post offices across the country are in desperate need of a funding boost in order to remain open. We need guarantees about their future.

“We must do everything possible to ensure the viability of our post offices throughout the country and I believe providing funding through the NDP could be key.

“The Programme for Government commits to continue to provide the nationwide network of post offices with funding to ensure their sustainability and enhance the value they bring to local communities, and we need to see this commitment fulfilled.

“We must ensure that increased funding for our post offices is included in the revised NDP”, concluded Deputy Carrigy.
