NDP vision for transport will connect every region of Ireland – Murphy
23rd July 2025 - Michael Murphy
The record €22 billion earmarked for transport in the National Development Plan (NDP) is a once in a generation opportunity to build a transportation infrastructure that is transformational, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Deputy Michael Murphy, Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport said the funding will support the delivery of critical projects that are vital to the country’s economic growth, environmental sustainability, and regional development.
Deputy Murphy said: “Flagship developments such as the Cork to Limerick motorway and the long-awaited MetroLink are central to the plan’s ambitions, along with continued support for rural and regional upgrades.
“I am particularly anxious to see a renewed focus on progressing the N24 upgrade This project is essential for the South-East, enhancing connectivity, improving road safety and supporting local communities and businesses.
“Fine Gael demonstrated its commitment to connecting communities and strengthening local economies through championing the National Broadband Plan, and places the same importance on providing a transportation network that’s fit-for-purpose.
“Transport projects already delivered under the NDP include the Dunkettle Interchange, the New Ross Bypass and the Moycullen Bypass; all demonstrating the importance and benefits of modern and safe roads, along with smart route mapping.
“Under the span of this NDP, we will also be obliged to reach our climate targets and the development of our EV and public transportation systems will be crucial to that. It’s essential that the electric vehicle charging network broadens so motorists who choose to go green can be assured they can do so with confidence and comfort.
“National Transport Authority’s contactless payment system upgrade will make using public transport easier and bring Ireland into line with other European countries; allowing commuters to tap on and off by using their own debit cards if they don’t want to use cash or Leap cards.
“Our population is growing. Following Census 2022, the CSO estimates growth of 8.5% to 5.4 million in 2024 and the working age population is now 3.5 million; 9% higher than 2019. This places greater demands on our roads and railways. The transportation budget in the NDP provides for a vision for transport that connects every region of Ireland.
“But that vision must be matched by timely delivery and proper budgetary oversight that gives good value to the taxpayer and that will be my guiding principle as Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport,” Deputy Murphy added.
