Sinn Féin want to trap small businesses in red tape – Doherty

12th November 2025 - Fine Gael Press Office

Regina Doherty MEP has sharply criticised Sinn Féin’s Lynn Boylan for what she describes as a hypocritical decision to side with far-right groups in the European Parliament. She says Sinn Féin are once again choosing chaos over reality by trying to block efforts to cut needless paperwork so people can simply get on with their jobs.

“Lynn Boylan is always quick to call out others for who they stand beside in Parliament, yet when it suits her agenda, she is perfectly happy to cosy up to her far-right allies,” Doherty said.

MEPs will vote this Thursday on a new EU law that keeps tough environmental rules for big polluters but cuts pointless form-filling for smaller firms. Instead of backing it, Boylan’s group in the European Parliament has lodged an amendment to stop the reforms, a move Doherty says shows Sinn Féin would rather create chaos than face reality.

Right now, even mid-sized companies must churn out hundreds of pages of sustainability reports every year, including irrelevant details such as office water use or how staff travel to work. This costs thousands and achieves nothing.

“This is pure common sense,” said Doherty. “Big companies will still report all emissions. But small businesses should not be forced to send spreadsheets to Brussels about their office kettle or water cooler. People just want to get on with the job.”

She accused Sinn Féin of being out of touch.

Lynn Boylan wants to keep small firms drowning in red tape. This law would let them invest, innovate and cut real emissions instead of wasting time on meaningless paperwork.

“Rather than support jobs and cut bureaucracy, Sinn Féin has chosen to stand with the far right and defend pointless red tape that holds Irish businesses
back.”
