Approval for state owned childcare facilities big step forward for families – Currie

Today’s approval for a landmark State-led early learning and childcare investment programme is a significant step forward for families struggling to access affordable childcare, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Emer Currie, Fine Gael Spokesperson for Childcare said: “Under the plan approved by Government today, the State will acquire properties which will be used as childcare facilities. This is an important step to address the shortages in childcare places. The new programme will focus on providing larger facilities capable of providing at least 100 places, with a particular emphasis on increasing places for children aged between 1- 3.

“The programme will support the acquisition of facilities, which will be run by not-for-profit community early learning and childcare providers.

“The announcement also highlights engagement with the Land Development Agency, local authorities and other State bodies to develop a pipeline of childcare facilities aligned with housing development.

“This is a positive first step and further efficiencies should also be pursued with this momentum. We specifically need an overhaul of the planning guidelines for childcare facilities so they are built and put into use, ending the practice where childcare facilities can lie empty for years.

“The Department should also be looking at reforms, such as a standardised design framework.

“The recognition of the community childcare sector is important, but the sector has seen minimal growth over the past five years. Targeted actions are now needed to strengthen their viability and capacity to expand.

“The State-led capital programme signals real progress building on Programme for Government actions, National Development Plan funding, and the recent publication of the Early Years Action Plan. Continued focus and follow through on integrated solutions will be essential to deliver the childcare system families so badly need.”
