Galway Hooker needs to be given formal heritage status – Kyne / Is gá stádas foirmiúil oidhreachta a bhronnadh ar Húicéir na Gaillimhe – Kyne

The Government needs to grant national heritage status to the Galway Hooker, the iconic boat synonymous with life on Galway Bay for centuries, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Seán Kyne, Fine Gael’s candidate in the Galway West bye-election said, “An bád mór is more than a working boat to the people of Galway West, it’s a living symbol of the maritime culture of communities along the Connemara and Aran coastlines.

He said it deserves to have the same level of formal state protection and recognition afforded to other elements of Ireland’s cultural heritage.

“The Galway Hooker is one of the most recognisable and beloved icons of the west of Ireland. Its carried turf to the Aran Islands, sustained fishing communities along Connemara’s coast and today it continues to sail at regattas like Cruinniú na mBád in Kinvara.

“The vessel is part of who we are and deserves to be formally part of our national heritage.”

Senator Kyne is calling on the Minister for Arts, Media, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht to initiate a formal process to have the Galway Hooker recognised under Ireland’s framework for intangible cultural heritage, in line with UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Ireland ratified in 2015.

The Galway Hooker is a distinctively designed wooden sailing vessel, characterised by its black-tarred hull and deep-red sails. Historically used to transport goods between the mainland and the Aran Islands.

Today, several dozen traditional Hookers remain in use, with a dedicated community of builders, sailors, and enthusiasts working to preserve the tradition.

Kyne said it’s about time the State gave the Galway Hooker official heritage designation.

“We have a duty to protect what makes this part of Ireland unique. The Galway Hooker is not just a boat, it is a story of ingenuity, community, and resilience.

“National heritage status would send a clear signal that the State values this tradition and is committed to ensuring it survives and thrives. It would also support the craftspeople, sailors, and communities who keep this tradition alive, and open doors to additional funding and international recognition.”

Dúirt an Seanadóir Seán Kyne, iarrthóir Fhine Gael i bhfothoghchán Ghaillimh Thiar: “Is mó atá san ‘bhád mór’ ná bád oibre do mhuintir Ghaillimh Thiar; is siombail bheo é de chultúr muirí na bpobal feadh chóstaí Chonamara agus na nOileán Árann.”

Dúirt sé go bhfuil sé tuillte aige go dtabharfadh an Stát an t-aitheantas agus an chosaint fhoirmiúil chéanna dó is a thugtar d’aon chuid eile d’oidhreacht chultúrtha na hÉireann.

“Tá Húicéir na Gaillimhe ar cheann de na híocóin is so-aitheanta agus is ansa le muintir iarthar na hÉireann. D’iompair sé móin go hOileáin Árann, chothaigh sé pobail iascaireachta feadh chósta Chonamara, agus sa lá atá inniu ann bíonn sé ag seoladh fós ag rásaí bád ar nós Chruinniú na mBád i gCinn Mhara.

“Is cuid dár bhféiniúlacht an bád seo agus tá sé tuillte aige a bheith ina chuid oifigiúil dár n-oidhreacht náisiúnta.”

Tá an Seanadóir Kyne ag iarraidh ar an tAire Ealaíon, Meán, Cultúir, Spóirt agus Gaeltachta tús a chur le próiseas foirmiúil chun aitheantas a thabhairt do Húicéir na Gaillimhe faoi chreat na hÉireann don oidhreacht chultúrtha dhochtaithe, de réir Choinbhinsiún UNESCO maidir le Cosaint na hOidhreachta Cultúrtha Dochtaithe, a dhaingnigh Éire in 2015.

Dúirt Kyne go bhfuil sé thar am anois go n-aithneodh an Stát Húicéir na Gaillimhe go hoifigiúil mar chuid dár n-oidhreacht náisiúnta.

“Ní bád amháin atá i Húicéir na Gaillimhe; is scéal é faoin ngliceas, faoin bpobal agus faoin teacht aniar.

“Thabharfadh stádas oidhreachta náisiúnta comhartha soiléir go bhfuil meas ag an Stát ar an traidisiún seo agus go bhfuil sé tiomanta do chinntiú go mairfidh sé agus go mbeidh rath air. Thabharfadh sé tacaíocht freisin do na ceardaithe, do na seoltóirí agus do na pobail a choimeádann an traidisiún seo beo, agus d’osclódh sé doirse do mhaoiniú breise agus d’aitheantas idirnáisiúnta.”
