New scrappage scheme will drive EV transition – Ó Muirí

3rd June 2026 - Naoise Ó Muirí TD

A new scrappage scheme for cars will be a significant boost for electric vehicle uptake across Ireland, according to Fine Gael TD Naoise Ó Muirí.

Deputy Naoise Ó Muirí, chair of the Oireachtas Climate Committee said the new scheme, offering families up to €8,500 towards replacing an older petrol or diesel car, is a significant step in encouraging people to make the switch to EVs.

Deputy Ó Muirí said: “For too long, the upfront cost of going electric has been the biggest obstacle for ordinary families. Lowering that cost through initiatives like this is a practical way of helping motorists who want to make the switch to electric.

“By targeting vehicles aged 13 years or older, we will take some of the most polluting cars off our roads, improving air quality and lowering emissions across the country.

“The scheme is rightly focused on those who depend on their car every single day and cannot fall back on public transport. These are the households where the financial barrier is felt most acutely, and where targeted support will make the biggest difference.

“Rural areas rely heavily on cars due to limited public transport and longer travel distances. It’s essential that we support these communities in the transition to electric, to deliver significant emissions reductions.

“This pilot comes as part of a broader package of measures, including a reduction in the grant price cap, giving even more people a realistic path to making the switch.

“This year has underscored the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels. Government incentives are playing a crucial role in advancing our climate action goals, and this scheme is a clear example of how we can continue to build on that momentum,” concluded Deputy Ó Muirí.
