The GPO needs to be a place for every child to visit in school – Geoghegan

The Government needs to be bold in its redevelopment of the GPO for future generations, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Fine Gael’s spokesperson for Dublin, Deputy James Geoghegan says the money allocated for the Dublin landmark’s regeneration must be met by ambition.
““The GPO is the country’s most important building. We must deliver a GPO that is unforgettable for every child that visits during their school years,” he said.
“It is the birthplace of our Republic. Visiting the GPO should be a feature of every child’s education. Every young person in Ireland should have the opportunity to walk through its doors and learn about the events and people that shaped our nation.”
Following Cabinet’s agreement to progress plans for the GPO’s redevelopment, Deputy Geoghegan believes it presents a unique opportunity to create a world-class educational and cultural attraction in the heart of Dublin.
“As plans for the future of the GPO move forward, we must remember what the building is being redeveloped for. Every child who walks through its doors should leave with a rich appreciation for the sacrifice that people made during the Easter Rising.
“I have long argued that the GPO can become one of Ireland’s great landmarks and visitor destinations. But it should be much more than a tourist attraction. It should be a place of learning, citizenship and national memory.
“The GPO tells the story of Ireland’s journey to independence. It is where future generations can connect directly with the story of our country.”
Deputy Geoghegan said the Government’s decision marks an important step towards unlocking the full potential of one of Ireland’s most important historic buildings.
“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create something truly special at the GPO. If we get this right, it can become a place that every Irish child visits, every Dubliner takes pride in, and every visitor to Ireland wants to experience.”
