Passport expiry reminder service confirmed – Linda Nelson Murray

1st July 2026 - Senator Linda Nelson Murray

A new service will alert citizens when their passport is about to expire, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

From 2027, anyone applying for a first-time passport or renewing an existing one will be able to sign up to get electronic reminders, including expiry notices from the Passport Service.

Senator Linda Nelson Murray said the change would be a welcome convenience for families. She received confirmation today that an expiry reminder service will soon be deployed when raising the issue with Fine Gael Minister Jerry Buttimer.

“Anyone who has ever needed an emergency passport appointment before a holiday knows why this matters. Adult passports last ten years and a lot can change in that time, people move houses, change email addresses or simply forget the date is creeping up on them.

“A straightforward reminder via text message or e-mail means fewer people caught out at the airport and fewer last-minute scrambles for appointments.”

This move is part of the wider modernisation of the service, which has also seen the rollout of a new-look passport book and card as well as an upgrade of the high-security printing equipment used to produce them.

Senator Nelson Murray said the service is opt-in rather than automatic because of data protection obligations which require personal data to be accurate and up to date before it can be used. That rules out simply reusing addresses from a passport issued a decade ago.

“It makes sense that people are asked to actively sign up rather than have old contact details used automatically. It means the reminder will reach the right person, at the right address, when it matters.”

Minister Buttimer told the Seanad: “Along with other upgrades to the Passport Service’s system, in 2027 citizens applying will be able to opt-in to get electronic communications, including passport expiry reminders from the Passport Service.
