An Taisce intervention on nitrates derogation out of touch with rural Ireland – Lynch

26th March 2026 - Senator Eileen Lynch

An Taisce’s intervention on the nitrates derogation is deeply unhelpful for farmers, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Eileen Lynch has strongly criticised the organisation for calling on the European Commission to reconsider its decision to grant Ireland a nitrates derogation, highlighting the importance of the derogation for farmers across the country.

Senator Lynch, said: “The derogation is a vital, science-based support for Ireland’s grass-based farming model and is subject to strict environmental conditions and ongoing monitoring.

“This is a carefully controlled measure that recognises the unique nature of Irish agriculture, while still protecting water quality. The intervention by An Taisce is out of touch with rural Ireland.”

Senator Lynch reiterated that farmers are already making significant efforts to improve environmental outcomes through reduced chemical usage, better slurry management and investment in sustainability measures.

“Farmers are under sustained pressure from rising costs and increased global uncertainty, and interventions like this risk undermining confidence and creating unnecessary panic across the sector,” she said.

Senator Lynch warned that any rollback of the derogation would have serious consequences for family farms, the 7000 farmers availing of the exemption, particularly in the dairy sector, leading to reduced incomes and wider economic impacts in rural communities.

“We all want to see improved water quality, but this must be achieved through engagement and support.

“We need a more balanced and constructive approach. I urge all stakeholders to work together to deliver both environmental protection and a sustainable future for Irish farming,” concluded Senator Lynch.
