Application for 40 bed day hospital marks a step forward for health care in Swords and North Dublin – Reilly

23rd July 2019 - Senator James Reilly

The planning application to Fingal Co Council for a new state of the art modern 40 bed day hospital is welcome news for Airside Swords according to local Senator and Doctor James Reilly.

“I have been campaigning and working on this project in Fingal for over 2 years, and I am happy to see it take a real step forward with a planning application due to be submitted to Fingal Co Council this week.

“The new hospital, planned to be constructed and finished in October 2020, will be a huge benefit for the almost 150,000 people across Fingal and North County Dublin. The Fingal towns of Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Malahide, Donabate, Portmarnock, Portrane and rural Fingal are between 9 minutes and 20 minutes’ drive from the proposed location close to Tesco and Ryanair HQ in Airside.

“Crucially, it will also help reduce waiting lists in Beaumont and the Mater Hospitals.

“A hospital such as this could deal with day procedures such as hernia operations, gall bladder surgery, cataracts, plastic surgery and even hip replacements

The proposed hospital will also include:

  • Urgent Care Centre – available to everyone- public and private patients
  • 8 operating theatres enabling operations like hip replacement and many other procedures
  • 40 beds including an Endoscopy Unit
  • Diagnostics- x-ray and laboratory facilities
  • A day case facility for diagnostic procedures and minor to mid-level surgery
  • Pharmacy and community facilities
  • €50 million investment
  • 500 jobs
  • Primary Care Centre
  • Winter garden café restaurant
  • 202 car park spaces
  • 84 bicycle spaces

“This will be a game changer in health care in Fingal, diverting patients from Beaumont emergency department and enabling many procedures to be performed in the local hospital in Swords, where a bed will be guaranteed for the patient,” said Doctor Reilly.
