Be prepared and stay safe if you’re following the Boys in Green to France – McLoughlin

19th May 2016 - Tony McLoughlin TD

With just three weeks to go to the start of the 2016 UEFA European Football Championships Fine Gael TD for Sligo-Leitrim, Tony Mc Loughlin, is urging all football fans planning to travel to France to be prepared for all eventualities and stay safe.

“As a long-time supporter of the Boys in Green I know how exciting the next few weeks will be for Irish football fans, as they look forward to what will hopefully be a great few weeks in France. In all the fuss it would be easy to forget about the practical measures that can be taken now to ensure everyone prepares properly, but being prepared will mean a much more enjoyable and hassle-free few weeks for the Green Army.

“I would encourage all those travelling to France to check their passports are in date, arrange comprehensive travel insurance before departing and register their details on the Department of Foreign Affairs Citizens’ Registration facility on www.dfa.ie. I would also encourage fans to read the advice on www.dfa.ie/euro2016 and keep up to date with travel advice.

“Since the terrorist attacks of the 13th of November in Paris, a state of emergency has been in force in the country and very stringent security measures are in place. Our Ambassador in Paris and her team are maintaining close contact with UEFA and the relevant French national and local authorities in relation to all aspects of planning and preparations for the tournament, including facilities for visiting fans.

“I have been informed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan that his department is working closely on planning and preparations with the FAI, the Gardaí and travel industry representatives. The Minister is also ensuring that there are additional, specially trained, consular staff on the ground in Paris, Bordeaux and Lille to help any fans which may need assistance.

“There are some very exciting times ahead for Irish football fans and to ensure we all enjoy them I’m asking all those travelling to avoid unnecessary risks, steer clear of trouble, drink responsibly and behave respectfully.

“I’m really looking forward to the games and weeks ahead and I would like to wish all the travelling fans an enjoyable and memorable time supporting the Boys in Green, in what I hope will be a very successful tournament.”
