Budget supports secured for farmers in Mayo and the West – Mulherin

9th October 2018 - Senator Michelle Mulherin

Fine Gael Senator Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the new supports secured for farmers in Mayo and the West announced today in Budget 2019.

The Mayo Senator said the funding will put farmers on a more sustainable footing and allow for real progress in the sector.

Senator Mulherin said: “The €20 million for the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot will underpin beef production and will also protect the suckler cow herd.

“The additional €23 million for ANC (Areas of Natural Constraint) will help both beef farmers and sheep farmers. All of these sectors are trying to eke out a living on marginal less productive lands.

“Also this will help support farmers in the face of threats from Brexit and help improve emissions efficiency in farming.

“I have been in constant communication with my Fine Gael colleagues, the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed outlining concerns raised by local farmers.

“In the west 81% of cows are suckler cows. In Mayo they account for 84%, in Roscommon and Leitrim, 93%.

“The suckler cow is the basic production machine for a vast industry, not only are we getting traceable quality and affordable food, but they provide the backbone of an entire industry of meat factories, marts, merchants and vets.

“This targeted scheme recognises the pressure suckler farmers are under and will put them on a more sustainable footing.

“The increased ANC payment will benefit particularly farmers in the West where the poorer land is.

“By supporting these farmers at this difficult juncture not only are we securing the future of the beef industry and our targets under Foodwise 2025, but also ensuring quality, traceable and affordable food for the consumer.”
