Comiskey welcomes €80,000 seed funding to 50km Greenway Project

Fine Gael Sligo North Leitrim Senator Michael Comiskey today (Tuesday) welcomed the allocation of €80,000 to a proposal, jointly made by Sligo and Leitrim County Councils, to develop a world class Greenway along the disused railway line between Sligo, Leitrim and the Northern Counties Railway.   The funding will be directed towards the initial design of the routes.   The projects will be developed separately but will complement each other and result in a Greenway stretching over 50km Collooney to Ballintogher in Co. Sligo traveling through Co. Leitrim, adjacent to Dromahair, Manorhamilton and Lough MacNean.   

“I very much welcome this announcement as it marks the commencement of an important initiative attractive to both local users and international visitors alike.

“Walking and cycle tours are becoming increasingly marketable and offer an ideal way in which to showcase the beauty of the West particularly Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh. 

“The development of the Greenway Project will coincide with the commencement of the Wild Atlantic Way Project both of which will add greatly to the existing tourist attractions in the area.  

“Projects such as these, which set out designated routes, are also very effective at increasing dwell time in an area and in encouraging repeat visits to complete the route.         

“The combination of these projects will create an attractive package for international tourist.

“I would like to congratulate the working groups in both Sligo and Leitrim who have contributed time and energy in bringing these projects to this stage and look forward to their eventual development.”
