Conway urges increased support for women forced into prostitution
5th November 2014 -
Fine Gael Clare Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice and Disability, Martin Conway, has urged the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, to consider the implications of the Annual Report of Ruhama launched today.
“Ruhama has provided exceptional support to over 2,500 women affected by prostitution over the last 25 years. Their Report provides a unique insight into the lives of women affected by prostitution and trafficking. I was delighted to attend the launch of the report today.
“The report reveals that there was an increase in the numbers accessing Ruhama in 2013, with 305 women given direct support and assistance through a comprehensive range of services. This represents an increase of 18% since the previous year.
“Given that there is an increase in the numbers accessing such services, the Government must work with organisations such as Ruhama to assist in their great work in supporting women affected by prostitution.
“Having participated in the extensive hearings held by the Oireachtas Justice Committee on prostitution last year, I whole heartedly endorse the unanimous recommendation of the committee to criminalise the purchase of sexual services, which was also specifically welcomed by Ruhama.
“I hope that the Minster will shortly act on the recommendations of the Justice Committee which would result in the reduction of the exploitation and harm of prostitution and sex trafficking.”
