Encouraging to see Catherine Connolly views changing on Triple Lock – O’Connell
28th August 2025 - Maeve O'Connell TD
Deputy Maeve O’Connell has said comments by opposition TD Catherine Connolly reinforce the need for the Government’s decision to amend the Triple Lock.
Speaking today, Deputy O’Connell said: “Amending the Triple Lock is first and foremost about Irish sovereignty. We must ensure that Ireland has the ability to utilise our resources without undue interference of foreign actors.”
The Fine Gael TD was speaking after Deputy Connolly this week said she was ‘seriously concerned’ about the ending of the mandate for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
Deputy O’Connell continued: “Forc many months now, the Opposition has been clearly against this decision, and are advocating for Ireland’s peacekeeping troops to remain subject to the authority of Russia, China, and the US.
“It now looks as if there is a gradual volte face taking place amongst those opposed to amending the Triple Lock.
“With recent developments regarding Ireland’s peacekeeping mission to Lebanon, I was encouraged that Catherine Connolly’s statements on the misuse of UN Security Council vetoes appears to show that some opposition TDs are now recognising the rationale behind this decision and will hopefully move towards supporting the Government on this important issue.”
