Enhanced role for Reservists will strengthen Defence Forces – Callaghan

9th June 2026 - Catherine Callaghan TD

The Supplemental Military Service (SMS) will allow Reserve Deference Forces to better contribute their skills, experience and expertise to the Defence Forces, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Catherine Callaghan said through the SMS, Reservists can provide operational and administrative support, engage in specialist and technical roles, and participate in overseas deployments, humanitarian missions, and training activities.

“Since my election, I have been actively engaging with Minister McEntee alongside the RDFRA to develop the Reserve Defence Forces as a key, voluntary asset to the State,” said Deputy Callaghan.

“As a former member of the Permanent Defence Forces, I know that our 204 First Line Reserve personnel and 1,612 Second Line Reserve personnel contribute an enormous amount to the everyday running of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

“It is incredibly important that we continue the development of a robust, dynamic Reserve, which can effectively and efficiently work with our Permanent Defence Forces once called upon.

“SMS will allow for the further integration of our Defence Forces and provide greater opportunities for Reservists to gain direct experience in Defence Forces operations, such as training activities and humanitarian missions.

“Reservists who choose to participate in SMS will be remunerated, and are entitled to all appropriate employment protections, allowances and subsistence arrangements, ensuring peace of mind for Reservists who wish to develop their skills through hands-on experience.

“Being able to rely on a flexible, and experienced Reserve is vital in this rapidly changing world.

“The introduction of SMS is a major milestone in furthering that goal, and I welcome the Minister’s ongoing focus in developing the Reserve,” concluded Deputy Callaghan.
