Feighan welcomes approval for €5.77 million watermains upgrade in Roscommon

9th March 2013 - Daniel Rowan

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has warmly welcomed the approval granted to Roscommon County Council to proceed with a €5.77 million upgrade of large sections of the county’s watermains infrastructure.

“I am delighted that the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD, has given the go-ahead to the County Council to carry out these major works under the Water Conservation Programme. The works will involve the replacement of over 68 kilometres of watermains at 36 different locations in the county at a total cost of almost €5.5 million.

“It will also include similar works to replace 1,185 metres of watermains at locations in Strokestown, Mockmoyne and Elphin Street in Boyle at a total cost of €270,000.

“This substantial investment programme will help tackle water loss levels in the existing supply systems and I know Roscommon County Council will advance these contracts to construction as quickly as possible.

“The Council’s watermains replacement programme reflects the importance of water conservation as a key objective under the Government’s Water Services Investment Programme. That is why funding for water conservation has been substantially increased under the programme.

“This boost follows on from Minister Hogan’s recent approval to invite tenders for major works on four Roscommon water scheme projects, costing €20 million. Needless to say, all of these projects will provide much-needed jobs in the construction sector.”
