Fianna Fáils questioning of European Ill judged and Ill timed – Richmond
24th August 2019 - Neale Richmond, TD
Fine Gael Senator Neale Richmond has slammed Fianna Fáil for more loose Brexit comments as their Brexit spokesperson Lisa Chambers questions European solidarity with Ireland in the face of Brexit.
“Over the past four years, we have seen unstinting solidarity from our European partners when it comes to Brexit. The Irish Government’s concerns for the Good Friday Agreement have become the EU’s concerns, with wholesale support of the backstop.
“In the very week the Tanaiste is visiting our European partners, Deputy Chambers’ comments are at best ill-judged.
“Following Timmy Dooley’s foray into Brexit commentary, a foray swiftly and publicly rebuffed by Micheál Martin, it is disappointing to see Deputy Chambers make such loose remarks.
“Deputy Dooley’s infamous tweet has been leapt upon by Brexiteers far and wide to try and attack Ireland and the latest iteration from a senior Fianna Fáil spokesperson couldn’t have come at a worse time.
“This week Chancellor Merkel, President Macron and President Tusk have once again stood squarely with Ireland in the face of London’s unreasonableness.
“It is disappointing to see Fianna Fáil trying to make political capital again over this very serious situation.
“This Government, along with European partners, is working steadfastly at home and abroad to prepare for all forms of Brexit and to maintain true European solidarity. Rather than constantly making flippant comments, Fianna Fáil’s spokespeople would be better off working with their domestic and European network to support this work.”
