Good day for consumers and SMEs as roaming charges slashed – Noone

Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson on European Affairs, Senator Catherine Noone, has welcomed the introduction of reduced roaming charges across the EU, describing it as a good day for consumers and SMEs.

“The practice of charging consumers through the nose for a quick phone call, text, or checking a map on the web is now finally coming to an end. Despite the fact that the cost of providing the service across Europe is minimal for the telecoms companies concerned, they got away with ripping off punters for far too long.

“The introduction of a European cap on roaming charges highlights the best of the EU, where a framework can be put in place to ensure fairness for consumers, cost competitiveness for small businesses operating across Europe, and transparency for tourists.

“The EU, under the guidance of Neelie Kroes, the Vice-President of the Commission, has really delivered for consumers on this issue.

“For as little as 20 cents, the European Commission estimates that you will be able to check a map five times, go on Facebook for half an hour or browse the news for ten minutes.

“As we continue in the digital age, it is vital that we can allow SMEs and digital startups to thrive both home and abroad. This is a vital step towards making Europe more connected, and Irish consumers, businesses and tourists will benefit as a result.”
