Green Light Given by Minister Phil Hogan for Kildare Water Supply Scheme

5th May 2011 - Senator Anthony Lawlor

“I am delighted to learn that the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD, has approved Kildare County Council’s contract documents for the Kildare Water Supply Scheme, Castlewarden/ Ballygoran contract” said Kildare North TD Anthony Lawlor.

The new scheme will involve the construction of distribution watermains and a new ancillary works at Ballygoran. As a result Kildare County Council will be less dependent on the Fingal County Council’s Leixlip Water Treatment Plant and it will also allow the Council to meet increased demands from enterprises in the area.

The implementation of this scheme will ensure that homes and businesses throughout the Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip and Straffan areas are provided with a secure water supply. The extreme weather conditions of the past two winters, and the associated water problems experienced by many families, have highlighted how access to a quality water service should no longer be taken for granted. All efforts to improve the supply of water should be warmly welcomed. Furthermore, the construction of infrastructure such as the Kildare Water Supply Scheme at Castlewarden/ Ballygoran will meet the increasing demands of industrial, commercial and other developments in the area, which is crucial during this time of economic hardship.

“I hope that Kildare County Council will now press ahead with the tender process for this scheme, ensuring that construction can get underway without delay” concluded Anthony Lawlor TD.
