Greenway Code of Best Practice need to be looked at – Murphy
12th November 2025 - Michael Murphy
An urgent review involving all stakeholders needs to be carried out on the Greenway Code of Practice, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Deputy Michael Murphy was speaking after a robust discussion at today’s meeting which he said highlighted both the enormous potential of Ireland’s Greenway network and the deep concerns among communities affected by the current delivery methods.
“Greenways are a national asset which support active travel, sustainable tourism and rural development,” Deputy Murphy said. “But its clear the way these projects are delivered must be trusted and transparent. Communities deserve meaningful engagement, fair treatment and respect for their livelihoods.”
During the Oireachtas Transport Committee meeting today, it heard evidence from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the National Greenway Action Association and the Deise Greenway Group about issues including consultation, compensation and the use of compulsory purchase orders which have caused concern in some affected areas.
“This current code must be urgently reviewed,” Deputy Murphy said. “It needs to protect property rights, rural livelihoods and people’s mental health. It also needs to ensure that public investment delivers value for money, while giving people confidence in the system.”
