‘Huge opportunities for Cork in data analytics sector’ – Murphy
4th February 2015 -
Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy – Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central – delivered a keynote address to a seminar on data analytics in Brussels this morning, hosted by Insight – Ireland’s dedicated research centre for this growing area. The centre is a partnership between a number of Irish universities, including UCC, various industry partners, and Science Foundation Ireland. It aims to create a healthier, safer and more productive world by empowering a data-driven society to make better decisions.
“It was a great pleasure to address this morning’s event in Brussels, at which Insight highlighted its activities and priorities to EU policy and decision makers. In my remarks, I emphasised the huge potential gains for society and the economy from this partnership approach to research in data analytics, and the need for consumers to be able to have trust and confidence in the technology they use.”
“The Government’s employment strategy, the Action Plan for Jobs 2015, which was published last week, prioritises ‘big data’ as an area in which Ireland can create significant new employment and commercial opportunities. I’m delighted that UCC is a central partner in the Insight Research Centre. With its thriving technology sector in areas such as cloud computing, ‘big data’ and analytics, Cork is well placed to take full advantage of new opportunities in this area.
“As Governments, industry and the scientific community in Europe seek to find solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing us in healthcare, education, energy, transport and the environment, the analysis of data has a hugely important role to play.”
