Increased medical test allowance will boost morale and retention of Reserve Defence Forces – O’Connell
30th March 2026 - Maeve O'Connell TD
The increased allowance for medical checks for the Reserve Defence Forces will help to further strengthen our Reserves, strengthen morale and support retention, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Deputy Maeve O’Connell said “As a former Reservist, I know how significant the annual medical check felt, as it held the key to allow you to continue your service. It is not simply an administrative requirement; it is a gateway to continued participation and commitment.
“I recently met with the Reserve Defence Forces Representative Association, who highlighted the increasing cost to undergo these medical exams and the fact that the vouched reimbursement had not been increased since the early 1990s. They told me it was becoming an increasingly prevalent barrier to retaining Reserve personnel.”
“The Minister’s decision to increase the vouched reimbursement, from €56.73 to €150 will not only help address costs, but also serve as a morale boost to Reservists, who see that this Government are recognising the important role that they play in maintaining our national security. This decision is a positive step forward and is part of a continued focus on improving conditions, supports and opportunities for all those who serve”
Deputy O’Connell added that supporting members of the Reserve Defence Forces is essential to building a modern and resilient defence capability.
“If we want to keep building up a robust and well-staffed Defence Force, it must be shown that we value the contribution of every one of our Reserve and Permanent Defence Force Members.
“As our Reservists are unpaid volunteers, it is important that we do not allow our Reservists to encounter cost barriers to continuing their service”.
