Lawlor delighted at Osberstown Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade and expansion plans

Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, Anthony Lawlor, was delighted to learn this morning (Thursday) that Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, has announced that approval has been given to Kildare County Council to seek tenders to upgrade and expand Osberstown Wastewater Treatment Plant. The contract will be funded under the Department of Environment’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013.

“This upgrade and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant at Osberstown is very significant for the people of Kildare North as it serves a vast population in Naas, Johnstown, Kill, Clane, Prosperous, and Sallins. It also expands to Newbridge, Athgarvan and Kilcullen. At present the plant operates at 80,000 population equivalent (p.e.) capacity and this will be expanded to cater for up to 130,000 (p.e.). This increased capacity will now facilitate the rapidly expanding industrial, domestic and commercial population in the local area. From an environmental point of view, this state of the art facility will treat the water to the highest standards which will protect and enhance the local environment.

“I am hopeful that, on commencement of works, Kildare County Council will then immediately allow planning permissions to proceed which had conditions attached pending the upgrading of the Osberstown Wastewater Treatment Plant. This new system will cater for a higher number of business and residential developments, which should be encouraged to bring our building sector back to life. I will be pressing Kildare County Council to proceed with seeking tenders for the contracts as soon as possible.”
