Local Democracy Taskforce will revitalise local government – Butterly
5th June 2025 - Paula Butterly TD
A new taskforce will introduce a series of recommendations to strengthen local government in Ireland, said a Fine Gael TD.
Deputy Paula Butterly, Fine Gael spokesperson on Regional Development, said there is a clear need to examine how we can improve our local government structures and the new taskforce will be key to bringing essential changes.
“Local government plays a really important role in our democracy and in the delivery of essential services for our communities. From housing to local roads to climate action our local authorities are responsible for so many services that impact our daily lives. Now we need to see how this system can be improved.
“The establishment of the Local Democracy Taskforce which is a Programme for Government commitment will look at what changes we need in structure, functions, governance, and funding and the role of councillors will be considered under each pillar.
“This includes examining the rebalancing of power between elected councillors and the Executive, devolving more decision-making powers to councillors; as well as providing councillors with enhanced data and greater input over the local authority, among many other things.
“Councillors work hard for the people that elect them, and we want to ensure they have greater decision-making powers.
“I am also delighted to hear that the taskforce will begin their work later this month. It is vital that we examine these issues as soon as possible.
“My colleague, Minister of State for Planning and Local Government John Cummins has worked hard to ensure this taskforce is in place. The taskforce will publish recommendations after carrying out their consultations, which will then be given to Minister Cummins.
“Fine Gael knows local government is the beating heart of our democracy and that is why we want to reform and strengthen it”, concluded Deputy Butterly
