Martin doesn’t even know basic Brexit facts – Richmond

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin doesn’t even understand the basic facts of Brexit, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

The Fine Gael Dublin-Rathdown candidate said Micheál Martin made a number of errors on a This Week RTÉ interview yesterday.

“He claimed on national radio that the Theresa May deal would have kept the UK in the single market and customs union, it didn’t. Can he explain this?”

“What we have here is a classic example of a cuckoo in the nest. Micheál Martin has seen the Government’s Brexit success and wants to claim it as his own. Micheál Martin has always been a good spoofer, but he would quickly be found out by the European Commission and by the UK side. I don’t want him anywhere near negotiations.”

Senator Richmond said the Fianna Fáil Leader is rewriting his role on Brexit just like he’s rewriting his role on crashing the economy.

He called on Deputy Martin to own up to his own shortcomings on Brexit over the last three-years and acknowledge the leadership shown by Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney.

Senator Richmond said, “Success has many parents, failure is an orphan and listening to Mícheál Martin on RTÉ radio, I couldn’t help but feel the Irish people were being misled by another Fianna Fáil leader trying to rewrite history.”
