O’Mahony pays tribute to Ireland West Airport Knock Chairman

7th June 2013 - Daniel Rowan

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has paid tribute to the outgoing chairman of Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK), Mr Liam Scollan, who has announced that he is set to retire from his role at the airport. Deputy O’Mahony is the Chairman of the Ireland West Airport Knock Study group which is examining proposals for the future development of the airport.

“It’s difficult to put into words the contribution of Liam Scollan to the success story that is Ireland West Airport Knock. Liam has overseen the expansion of the airport to the point where it is by far the largest regional airport in the country. Despite the poor economic climate, passenger numbers have kept growing and growing and almost 700,000 people used the airport in the past year.

“The success of Ireland West Airport Knock has had a hugely significant impact on the economy of the region and Liam deserves huge credit for this role in making the airport what it is today.

“Ever since he was appointed CEO in 2002, Liam Scollan has displayed tremendous vision, drive and commitment. He carried those qualities into his performance as Chairman of the Board of the airport when he succeeded Joe Kennedy in 2009.

“Now that he has decided to retire I think it’s only right and proper that his role in the development of the airport be acknowledged publicly. I wish him well in his future endeavours and in his retirement.”
