Micheál is a Fine Gael TD representing the constituency of Longford–Westmeath, first elected to Dáil Éireann in November 2024. He previously served as a Senator from 2020 to 2024, during which time he played an active role on multiple Oireachtas committees and contributed significantly to legislative debates on regional development, education, and social inclusion.
In his current parliamentary roles, Deputy Carrigy serves as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Local Government & Heritage, where he leads cross-party scrutiny and policy development on one of the most pressing issues facing Irish society. He also chairs the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism, advocating for stronger supports and services for people with autism and their families.
Deputy Carrigy began his political career in local government, elected in 2009 to represent the Granard Electoral Area on Longford County Council. He was re-elected in both 2014 and 2019, topping the poll on the first count in the latter. He served as Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council from 2019 to 2020, demonstrating a deep commitment to community-led development and local service delivery.
A proud Longford native, Micheál has long been active in community life, including his ongoing role as Postmaster in Ballinalee. He is passionate about rural sustainability, regional equality, and ensuring that all citizens—particularly young people—have access to opportunities, services and representation.
Outside of politics, Micheál is a lifelong sports enthusiast and has held several senior roles in Longford GAA over the years. His long-standing involvement in the organisation at both county and provincial level reflects his strong belief in the power of sport to build community, promote wellbeing, and bring people together.
Deputy Carrigy continues to work closely with local stakeholders, Fine Gael colleagues, and government departments to advance the priorities of the people of Longford–Westmeath and contribute constructively to Ireland’s national progress.
