Pilot online application system for admissions to post-primary will simplify process for families – Scahill

1st October 2025 - Senator Gareth Scahill

A new pilot online application system for secondary school admissions will make it easier for families to secure a place for their children, especially those with additional needs, says a Fine Gael Senator.

Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Youth, Senator Gareth Scahill says it will be rolled-out in 15 post-primary schools, within five School Planning areas in Galway, Kildare, Cork, Wicklow and Offaly.

“The system, available at applytoschool.ie goes live from today until October 22nd and will simplify the process to secure a place at post-primary schools, and will bring clarity and fairness to school admissions,” said Senator Scahill.

“It’s a forward-thinking solution that reflects Fine Gael’s commitment to inclusive and accessible education.”

The pilot system is part of overall work towards a Common Application System for admissions to post-primary schools, similar to the CAO model at third level, which will involve significant technical work, stakeholder engagement, and legislative reform.

The Department of Education plans to expand the system incrementally to other areas around the country to ensure robustness and efficiency.

A comprehensive communications campaign will accompany the pilot, engaging with local communities, schools, and stakeholders to ensure widespread awareness and support.

Recent figures show that around 70% of post-primary schools saw steady, or increased enrolments within the 2024/25 academic year, with 80% of School Planning Areas expected to require additional places over the next decade.

“This is about putting families first,” Senator Scahill concluded. “I look forward to seeing the positive impact this pilot will have and to working with my colleagues to ensure its success and expansion.”

The pilot application system will be rolled out across five School Planning Areas – Athenry, Celbridge, Clonakilty, Greystones, and Tullamore/Killina – covering 15 post-primary schools. These schools will receive tailored supports to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
