Public will harshly judge those who refuse to attend committees on RTÉ governance issues – Dillon
26th June 2023 - Alan Dillon, TD
Anyone refusing to attend Oireachtas committees hearings this week discussing the governance issues at RTÉ will be judged harshly by the public, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Deputy Alan Dillon, who sits on both the Oireachtas Media and Public Accounts committees, said it is imperative that all those invited attend this Wednesday and Thursday.
“Whether senior personnel are still in employment with RTÉ or have concluded their career at the broadcaster, if they have knowledge and an insight to offer on this affair, they should attend this week’s hearings in Leinster House,” the Mayo TD said.
“The Oireachtas was lied to and misled previously. Truthful accounts of what was decided, occurred, and implemented at Montrose is required, nothing else.
“Obfuscation and stonewalling can be left at the gates of Kildare Street this week,” he said.
An external review of the governance and culture at RTÉ is being taken by Government under the guidance of Media Minister Catherine Martin.
Deputy Dillon said the Government review must take place in a speedy manner.
“While it is important, the review is done accurately and professionally, we cannot wait until next year for this to be concluded. Public trust has been completely shattered here by what appears to be the actions of a small few.
“We need the review and its recommendations concluded and published as soon as possible.
“Our national broadcaster, through no fault of the vast majority of hard-working staff in there, is in very stormy waters and it’s future must be secured with navigation to calmer waters mapped out,” Deputy Dillon said.
