RTÉ must clarify end of Grafton Street Christmas Eve tradition – Ó Muirí

RTÉ’s decision to cancel the long-standing tradition of a live Christmas Eve broadcast from Grafton Street has been described as deeply disappointing by a Fine Gael TD.

Deputy Naoise Ó Muirí said, “This has been a fixture of Irish life for over half a century. Families have gathered to hear the show hosted by Joe Duffy over the past number of years.

“As a former Dublin Lord Mayor, I saw firsthand how special this show was for the thousands of festive shoppers who have made it part of their Christmas celebration.

“It was a cherished public service broadcasting tradition which captured the spirit of Ireland at Christmas with music, laughter and the unique atmosphere from the centre of our capital.”

RTÉ has announced in its preview for the Christmas period, that Oliver Callan will host a special show on Christmas Eve instead from the RTÉ Radio Centre, and while the programme says it will feature a live audience, guests and festive favourites, Deputy Ó Muirí noted the move represents another cutback by the broadcaster.

“RTÉ’s retreat from Grafton Street into a studio is a sad reflection of the direction the organisation is taking. At a time when people crave connection and quality content, RTÉ has chosen to abandon beloved traditions.”

Deputy Ó Muirí has called on RTÉ to reconsider its approach as it is the second time in over 50 years the show won’t broadcast from Grafton Street, the last time being due to Covid-19.

He also highlighted the importance of recognising traditions which bring people together.

“The radio show on Grafton Street every Christmas Eve was a moment of joy and unity for the nation. RTÉ should protect traditions of public service broadcasting like this and not discard them.”
