Statement by Frances Fitzgerald TD on the death of Monica Barnes
3rd May 2018 - Frances Fitzgerald MEP
“I’m deeply shocked to hear of the death of Monica Barnes.
“Monica made a critical and important contribution to improving women’s lives in Ireland. She was a strong voice in Dáil Éireann at a time when there were few female elected representatives and indeed few women in public life.
“Monica made a major contribution in all the roles she filled. She was brave and forthright in expressing her views and responding to issues. She used her voice to advocate for women in particular and spoke out on the issues that mattered most to them.
“Monica was an inspiration to me and many other women who followed her into the Dáil. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
“My sincere condolences go to her family.”
