Statement from the Tánaiste Simon Harris on the passing of David Andrews

30th June 2026 - Fine Gael Press Office

I was very saddened to learn of the passing of David Andrews, the former Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs.

David gave decades of service to public life in Ireland, including as a TD for Dún Laoghaire and as Minister for Foreign Affairs on two occasions between 1992 and 1993 and again from 1997 to 2000.

It was in this role that he played a central role in a pivotal time for this country, including during the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. This was an achievement that continues to shape peace and stability on this island for which we are all very grateful.

A member of one of Ireland’s most notable political dynasties, he was the son of Todd Andrews, a founding member of Fianna Fáil, and his contribution to public life and the public good continued into the next generation through his son MEP Barry Andrews.

In more recent years David’s work as chairman of the Irish Red Cross reflected a commitment to humanitarian causes and to those most in need.

I want to extend my deepest sympathies to his family, including his wife Annette and five children, his many friends and his former colleagues.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
