‘The Outing’ represents new beginning for Lisdoonvarna festival – Conway

30th August 2013 - Senator Martin Conway

Fine Gael Senator for Clare and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Disability and Equality, Martin Conway, has today (Friday) welcomed the start of the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking festival, which this year is set to host singletons from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community for a weekend of fun and matchmaking. The Outing event which runs from Friday to Sunday, will mark the opening weekend of the month-long festival which sees thousands of single people come to Lisdoonvarna.

“The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking festival is an important part of the culture and tradition of Co. Clare which has been running for generations.  The event this weekend heralds a new beginning for the festival and will no doubt foster tolerance and equality in our community.

“I would like to commend the organising committee in Lisdoonvarna for having this inclusive event.  This year, I believe the event will prove to be a fantastic example of a community recognising that in order for a tradition to continue capturing the imagination of the people it has to embrace modern life without losing any of its unique magic and culture.

“I hope that the thousands of people who are expected to visit Lisdoonvarna over the coming weekend get an opportunity to sample our great local produce and enjoy our traditional music, culture and have the opportunity to sample some of our great locally produced food.  I also hope that everyone gets to join in the excitement and anticipation ahead of the All Ireland Senior Hurling final Sunday week between Clare and Cork.”
