Traffic cameras needed to tackle speeding in Dublin – McAdam
11th May 2026 - Fine Gael Press Office
Installing traffic light cameras at junctions in Dublin Central will catch motorists breaking red lights, the Lord Mayor of Dublin has said.
Councillor Ray McAdam, the Fine Gael candidate in the Dublin Central bye-election, said residents across Dublin want to see further measures taken to tackle dangerous driving.
“Red light running is all too common in our capital, and this puts the lives of pedestrians and drivers at risk.
“Currently there is a traffic light camera pilot running at Merrion Gates. The system there automatically detects red-light violations and speeding, which can result in an €80 fine and three penalty points.
“There are plans to install more cameras across the capital, but we need to see these introduced as soon as possible.
“Our European neighbours have long been using these traffic light cameras and if we’re serious about road safety we need to see a wide rollout across Dublin.
“With drivers breaking red lights a problem right across the capital, the Gardaí can’t always be there to catch people. These cameras will help free up Garda time so they can be out on the beat across the city.
“Drivers who put themselves and others at risk because of speeding must be held to account. We’ve all been stuck in traffic and seen motorists wrongly use bus lanes or run a red light. Introducing these cameras is key to catching them.
“It is vital that we rollout more traffic light cameras to intensify enforcement when people break red lights. The introduction of traffic light cameras across Dublin Central is essential to make our roads safer for all users,” concluded Councillor McAdam.
